Meating The Need Update December 2018

This past month, we again served two back-to-back nights, Wednesday & Thursday, where our volunteers came down to the shelter to serve dinner (see photos below). We fed 483 people Wednesday night and about an equal number on Thursday night. Both nights, the main course and drinks were supplied by Meating The Need. If you have never been with us to serve the evening meal, please consider volunteering. I promise you a great and compelling experience.

During this season of giving and sharing our many blessings with our friends and family, I hope you will consider a year end gift to feed the homeless in downtown San Antonio. For such a small charitable organization, we make a big impact on the homeless population in our home town by supplying food to St. Vinnie’s kitchen, in the Prospect’s Courtyard at the Haven for Hope Homeless shelter. As our name implies, we provide the “meat” in Meating the Need. We provide the main course almost every night of the week, 365 days a year, with ground beef, chicken, fish, chicken fried steak, steak fingers, sausage and cheese for cheese enchiladas. We also provide vegetables and something to drink. The board of directors cover all administrative cost so 100% of your donation goes to buying food. You may make a tax deductible donation through our website www.meatingtheneed.org (debit, credit or PayPal) or by sending a check to the address at the bottom of the page.

Our latest delivery of food was Wednesday, November 28th. Our next delivery will be this coming Wednesday,
December 12th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

480 Salisbury Steaks
110 lbs. Pollock Fish Patties
100 lbs. Ground Beef
1760 Breaded Beef Fingers
480 Beef Patties (4oz)

Another sucessful night feeding San Antonio's homeless at the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen (St. Vinny's Bistro) at Haven for Hope Homeless Shelter.Meating The Need Update September 2018 This month, Chef Lorris, who manages the day to day operations of the St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen (St. Vinny’s Bistro), shared with me two handwritten letters he recently received from former homeless men who found refuge in the Prospect’s Courtyard at Haven for Hope. Both men wrote directly to St. Vinny’s Bistro to express their thanks to Chef Lorris for letting them work in the kitchen while pulling their lives back together. Both men have now found permanent housing. One man, who is a military veteran said, “I will never forget the feeling of being treated with equal respect from day 1.” The second man said that he had landed in the Prospect’s Courtyard due to his drug addiction. In the Prospect’s Courtyard “I converted my life over to Christ and I believe that Christ lead me to St. Vinny’s Bistro with Chef Lorris. I was able to recover from my drug addiction.” As I have said before, Chef Lorris is one of the unsung heroes of our city. Truly the angel of San Antonio’s homeless, and I am honored to occasionally get to work with him. Somehow each day, Chef Lorris is able to piece together breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year. Meating The Need Update August 2018
Every time we go downtown to serve dinner to San Antonio’s homeless, it is shocking to me when I see teenagers or young people in their early twenties among the people whom we serve. I don’t know their individual stories but I do know that a high percentage of them are former foster children who have simply aged-out of the system and are now on their own with no family to support or guide them. The Prospects Courtyard at Haven for Hope offers these young people a safe place to stay without fear of being physically assaulted. And of course, the St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen (St. Vinnie’s Bistro) provides breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year. Additionally, Haven for Hope also offers job training and placement, medical and dental services, recovery of lost or stolen IDs and assistance in finding permanent housing. Our immediate goal is that no one goes hungry in San Antonio as part of our larger effort to give people a hand up and off the street permanently. On behalf of the homeless, I again thank you for your support!

This past month, we again served two back-to-back nights, Wednesday & Thursday, where our volunteers came down to the shelter to serve dinner (see photos below). Meating The Need Update June 2018

It is so HOT in San Antonio this time of year. Can you imagine being out on the streets all day, trying to find some shade to cool off? It is such a blessing that our city has a place where the homeless can come in out of the heat, cool off, and sit down with a little dignity to a nutritious meal. The Prospects Courtyard at Haven for Hope is just that place. The St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen (St. Vinnie’s Bistro) provides breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year in a large air conditioned room. The kitchen struggles financially every month to arise to this momentous task. That is where Meating The Need steps in to fill the gap. With financial help from our supporters, Meating The Need buys the high quality meats and protein which our friend, Chef Lorris, builds the meal around. Chef Lorris tells me every month that they can’t do what they do without Meating The Need delivering the groceries every other Wednesday. On behalf of the homeless, I again thank you for your support!

This past month was our second time to have two back to back nights, Wednesday & Thursday, where our volunteers came down to the shelter to serve dinner to the homeless (see photos below). We had two huge crowds of people both nights. We fed 457 people on Wednesday night and 474 on Thursday night. Both nights the main course, gravy, vegetable and drink were supplied by Meating The Need. If you have never been with us to serve the evening meal, you would be surprised at how gratefully the people are and how many time they thank us for being there to help them. When a homeless person asks God to bless you for being there it is truly a moving experience.

Our latest delivery of food was this past Wednesday, June 27th. Our next delivery will be Wednesday, July 11th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

Meating The Need Update May 2018

Last month was our first time to actually have two back to back nights where our volunteers come down to the shelter to serve dinner to the homeless. We had no problem filling two crews to serve dinner both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. We were physically there two nights but due to our generous donors, we are there almost every night of the week, 52 weeks a year, in the form of providing the main course items for the evening meals. Just check out the list below of the high quality meats and staples we deliver every other Wednesday.

According to a head count of the homeless population in San Antonio, the ranks of the “unsheltered” homeless grew 23% over the past year from 1,102 to 1,353. The Prospect’s Courtyard at Haven for Hope, which are the folks we feed through the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen accounted for 648 of the 1,353, which means we are feeding almost half of all the homeless in San Antonio. The other 705 unsheltered homeless were found in downtown but also throughout the San Antonio metropolitan area. One bright spot in the report was that the chronically homeless fell to 15% of the unsheltered homeless meaning the that for 85% of the people, this is a temporary situation. Something bad happened to them which put them on the streets with nowhere to live. That is where we come in. We are there to help them with a hot, nutritious meal while they get back on their feet.

Our latest delivery of food was this past Wednesday, May 2nd. Our next delivery is Wednesday, May 16th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

480 Salisbury Steaks
110 lbs. Pollock Fish Patties

Meating The Need

We’re Celebrating 11 years of Meating The Need
March 2007 to March 2018

It is hard to believe but we have been delivering food to the shelter every other Wednesday for 11 years! We started as an idea to trying to ensure that the kitchen serving the homeless had something in the freezer as a back-up so they never ran out of food. We have grown into an organization which supplies enough food to the shelter to put something on the plate for dinner almost every night of the year. How could this continue for 11 years? It must be “a God thing.” A God thing and a whole lot of people who care that those in desperate need at the homeless shelter don’t ever go hungry in our city. Our last night to serve dinner at the shelter was March 14th (See photos below). That night I spoke with Chef Lorris, outside the kitchen. We could see our volunteers in a production line building meals, personally greeting and hand-delivering the meals, handing out drinks, assisting disabled folks to a table and assisting with clean up. Chef Lorris said he is sometimes questioned by the people in the shelter we are serving. They sincerely ask “why do these people come down here to help? Why do they care?” That is a good question!

A question with as many answers as there are supporters of our organization. Whether you support us financially or come to the shelter to feed the homeless face-to-face, or both, we are an organization which comes together to support the members of our community who struggle. For many, the shelter is just a short term but important place to help them get back on their feet after a job loss or some other unfortunate turn of events. For others who have a life long struggle with mental illness, addiction, or depression, it is a God-sent safe place to stay. Certainly, the message of treating others as you would want to be treated is something we can all believe in. If my life spun out of control due mental illness, I would pray there was a place I could eat and rest my head without fear as I struggled to recover. That place is the place we serve called the Prospect’s Courtyard at Haven for Hope and the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen (St. Vinnie’s Bistro).

Our latest delivery of food was this past Wednesday, March 21st. Our next delivery is this coming Wednesday, April 4th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

Meating The Need Update – December 2017

There are few things more rewarding in life than being able to share some of our many blessings with the least among us, who can be found in the Prospect’s Courtyard at the Haven for Hope Homeless Shelter on a cold winter night. And let me tell you, it was COLD last Wednesday night, Dec. 27th. There was a huge crowd trying to get in out of the cold. It seemed they were all wearing every piece of clothing they owned, some with old blankets wrapped around them. Our volunteers serve up 442 plates of hot chicken fried steaks with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread, a slice of pie and some Kool-aid. The chicken fried steaks, gravy, green beans, and Kool-aid had all been delivered earlier in the day by Meating the Need. After finishing dinner, over and over again, people would stick their heads back into the kitchen door to say “thank you for coming down here,” how great the dinner was and how much they appreciated it. A repeated refrain I kept hearing was “bless you all for being here!” After hearing that, my Christmas was complete.

Through the generous donations from our supporters, we are able to buy food from our friends at Sysco Foods and have the food delivered every other Wednesday for the past 10 years. As I said above, our last delivery was Dec.27th. Our next delivery will be Wednesday, January 9th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

110 lbs. Pollock Fish Patties
100 lbs. Ground Beef
1760 Breaded Beef Fingers
480 Beef Patties (4oz)
60 lbs. Pulled Chicken
200 lbs. Cut-Up Raw Chicken

120 lbs. Frozen Cut Green Beans
96 lbs. Frozen Stir Fry Mixed Vegetables
30 gallons Kool-Aid Tropical Punch Drink Mix
288 oz Lipton Ice Tea Mix
Total $3,336.04
Our Board of Directors covers all administrative costs enabling 100% of donations to be used to buy food.

Meating The Need

Meating The Need Update – November 2017 Thanksgiving each year is a time when many of us spend time with our families, feast on turkey with all the trimmings and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. This year Meating the Need was able to share some of those blessings with our homeless brothers and sisters at the Prospects Courtyard at Haven for Hope. Through a very generous donation from our friends at HEB Grocery Stores and another one of our donors, Meating the Need was able to purchase and supply 18 spiral cut hams and 18 turkeys to the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen to be served on Thanksgiving day. We personally delivered the hams and turkeys to a very appreciative kitchen staff so that no one went hungry on Thanksgiving day. Our last night to serve dinner at the shelter was November 1st (See photos below). Thank you to all our volunteers who came out and made it a success. We served dinner to just under 400 men and women that night. Chef Lorris, who supervises the kitchen, commented that the homeless that he feeds daily (breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year) change from day to day or “turn-over” regularly. Some folks are only there for a few days or a few weeks and then disappear, only to be replaced by the faces of new people in dire need. We hope and pray that the Prospect’s Courtyard is a safe place to stay and assists them on the way back to permanent housing. The shelter provides guests with a mailing address, a place to wash clothes, shower and bathroom facilities and someone to supervise, store and dispense needed medications. Still, there are others with more serious problems suffering from mental illness or addiction whom we see each month our group returns to the shelter to serve dinner. Through the generous donations from our supporters, we are able to buy food from our friends at Sysco Foods and have the food delivered every other Wednesday. Our latest delivery was November 15th. Meating The Need

Meating The Need Update – September 2017
This past August 30th, our volunteers had another inspiring night at the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen (St. Vinny’s Bistro) feeding San Antonio’s homeless in downtown. I have been serving dinner at the kitchen for over 20 years, first at the SAMM Shelter and now at Haven for Hope. Each and every time it is a moving experience. Volunteers for the first time are always surprised at the diverse group of guests we host for dinner each night. Some folks look like they have been on the streets for 20 year battling a mental illness or an addiction which keeps them on the streets. Other folks surprise the volunteers because they look just like their friends and neighbors. They have landed at the shelter through some unfortunate event or circumstance which caused them to lose their place to live. They could not afford to move to a new place and now have lost all of their possessions, all at once. The kitchen makes 200 “to-go lunches” for the men and women who leave the shelter to work each day and are working to get back on their feet. Our first time volunteers are always struck by how appreciative the people are who come through the line, often thanking us and blessing us as we serve them up a hot plate of food.

Our Meating the Need volunteers go down to the shelter once every five weeks to serve dinner (see photos below). Our last night at the shelter we fed 451 people. The St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen struggles financially to feed that many people breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year, which is why Meating the Need’s support is so critical to the kitchen. Unfortunately, due to our limited budget we are having to trim some items off our delivery every other week. We are sticking with our core mission of providing high quality meats to build the meal around and cutting the items below in red. They will no longer appear on the list.

Our latest delivery of food from our friends at Sysco Foods was this past week, Wednesday, September 6th. Our next delivery will be Wednesday, September 20th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

480 Pork Chops 4oz
110 lbs. Pollock Fish Patties
480 Salisbury Steaks
80 Lbs Fresh Salad Mix & 4 gallons of Ranch Dressing
100 lbs. Ground Beef
1760 Breaded Beef Fingers
480 Beef Patties (4oz)
60 lbs. Pulled Chicken
200 lbs. Cut-Up Raw Chicken
480 Breaded Chicken Breast Patties
20 lbs. Shredded Cheese
1000 Polish Sausages 3.2 oz
480 Chicken Fried Steaks

Meating The Need

Meating The Need Update – July 2017
As you know, Meating the Need has been shipping food to the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen every other Wednesday for 10 years to feed the homeless in downtown San Antonio. That is 26 times each year. First at the old SAMM Shelter and now at the Haven for Hope. I have been asked, “how many meals does the food provide?” We buy the expensive part of the meal, the meat. My calculation is that from the list below, we provide 5,720 servings of beef, chicken, pork or sausage every two weeks. With the average evening meal serving 450 people, Meating the Need is putting the meat on the plate for dinner for 13 nights out of 14 nights every two weeks. We also provide 20 pounds of shredded cheese for Cheese Enchiladas night which means, Meating the Need provides the main course every night of the week for two weeks and then our next shipment of food shows up for the next two weeks!

In addition to the meat, we are also providing 2,858 servings of vegetables or salads on the evening meal plate which equals to six nights every two weeks. Our food shipment is completed with cream gravy mix, margarine, salad dressing, season salt, BBQ sauce and finally drink mix to wash it all down.

Our volunteers go down to the shelter once every five weeks to serve dinner (see photos below) but we are actually present at the shelter every night through the food we (you) provide to the homeless. Chef Lorris serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner 365 days a year and provides 300 sack lunches “to go” 5 days a week to those living at the shelter who leave to work each day. The shelter struggles financially to meet the ever-growing demand which means we still have work to do but our great impact is made possible by your support.

Our latest delivery of food from our friends at Sysco Foods was this week, Thursday, July 13th. Our next delivery will be Wednesday, July 26th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

480 Pork Chops 4oz

Meating The Need

Photos from Meating the Need's last night at Haven for Hope on May 10th.Meating The Need Update – May 2017 Serving three meals a day, seven days a week, to ensure no one on the streets of downtown San Antonio goes hungry is a monumental task. That equals to around 7,000 meals a week. Meating the Need is fortunate to be part of an amazing team at the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen (St. Vinny’s Bistro) in the Prospect’s Courtyard of Haven for Hope. The person who makes it all come together each day is Chef Lorris Gibson. This man is on a mission-from God!! Somehow each day, he transforms the most basic food staples into well-balanced, nutritious and delicious meals. The “secret sauce” he adds to the mix is that he cares deeply for the guests who come through the line each day. He provides each guest with a dose of dignity by serving up a meal fit to be served in some of the best restaurants in town. How does he do it? As I said, he is on a mission-from God. Our last night to serve dinner on May 10th, Chef Gibson used the chicken breast Meating the Need provided to create the most incredible chicken with broccoli and cheese sauce, served over a bed of pasta, with a side salad (also from Meating the Need), bread and dessert. It was inspiring to hear the guests repeatedly say, “this looks great,” “this smells so good,” and “bless you for this great meal.” Not only does Chef Gibson plan and cook the meals, he also trains some of the homeless in the kitchen, providing them with skills to find jobs outside the shelter. Meating The Need

Meating The Need Update – April 2017
Our most recent evening to serve dinner at the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen (St. Vinny’s Bistro) in the Prospect’s Courtyard of Haven for Hope, we had quite a surprise waiting for us. We were greeted by Kenny Wilson, the President of Haven for Hope, Frank Kiolbossa, the President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for San Antonio and the Executive Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Valerie Finley. They were all there to congratulate us on our 10 year anniversary of Meating the Need. We were presented with a certificate honoring our service in feeding the homeless (see photos below). We were completely caught off guard and had no idea this was going to happen. Our team was led out into the main room surrounded by the people we serve to accept the award. If that were not enough, there was a large banner of butcher’s paper hung over the doorway to the kitchen thanking Meating the Need and signed by all the homeless guests with notes of gratitude. It got me quite choked up! I have it here with me as one of my most cherished possessions, though it really belongs to all of you, the supporters of Meating the Need and our mission to feed the homeless.

Also honored that night was our friend Chad McNair, owner of Aspen Beverage. Aspen Beverage supplies all of the coffee for St. Vinny’s and donated the commercial mixer and dispensers. Chef Lorris, who runs the day to day operations of the kitchen, has told me, “you just can’t imagine how important a simple cup of coffee is to these people.”

Our last night to serve dinner was March 29th. Our next night to serve dinner is Wednesday, May 10th.

Meating The Need

We Are Celebrating 10 years of Meating The Need

In March 2007, I invited Kelly Hudson to join me in serving dinner at the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen at the SAMM Shelter in downtown San Antonio. That night, we ran out of the chicken we serving which had been donated earlier in the day by a restaurant. The kitchen was scrambling around to find something else the serve the remaining hungry people in line. On the way home, Kelly turned to me and said, “We need to do something about this! The kitchen should not ever have to depend on what comes in the door that day. Maybe, we could raise money so the kitchen always has a back-up in the freezer, just in case.” That night, Meating The Need was born. I pitched the idea to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. They said, “We love it and here is $500 in seed money to get it started.” And the rest, as they say, is history. We (that means all of our supporters) have delivered food continuously, every other week for 10 years!

In 2016, Meating The Need donated an astonishing 20.17 tons of foods to the St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen (St. Vinny’s Bistro) in the Prospect’s Courtyard at the Haven for Hope. Most of the food consisted of frozen meats so the kitchen never runs out of the main course items to build the meal around, like that night in March 2007.

I am often asked, “So where does the money come from to buy all this food?” My answer is always the same, “people who care.” People who care that the mentally ill, the alcoholics, the migrant day laborers, the disabled, and those just released from prison whose families don’t want them, don’t go hungry in San Antonio. Our fantastic Board of Directors, most of whom have been on the Board for the full 10 years, cover all administrative cost so every dime donated goes to buy food.

Our last night to serve dinner was February 22nd (see photos below). Our next night to serve dinner is next Wednesday, March 29th.

If you have a friend who wants to volunteer to serve dinner at the shelter, there is a “Volunteer” button to put them on the invitation list for our next night serving dinner. The new website was designed and then donated by our partners at Incite Digital Marketing & Advertizing. This was many, many man-hours donated for the benefit of the homeless in downtown San Antonio. You will agree, they do amazing work and I highly recommend them.

You may have seen the St.Vincent de Paul Kitchen (AKA St. Vinny’s Bistro) on Channel 4 and/or Channel 12 News last month.

The kitchen, which has served literally millions of plates of food since it started at the old SAMM Shelter in 1985, is experiencing severe financial difficulties. Meating the Need already is a major donor of food to St. Vinny’s and to help the kitchen meet their commitment to feed San Antonio’s homeless, we are committing to doubling our food donations over the next 6 months! If you have not donated to Meating the Need before, this would be a good time to consider making a contribution through our new website.

Our last night to serve dinner was October 12th. (See Photos Below) We served Breaded Steak Finders with Cream Gravy, Fresh Green Salad, and Kool-Aid Punch, all provided by Meating the Need. The plate was rounded out with Mashed Potatoes, Bread and Cheese Cake for dessert.

Our last delivery of food from our friends at Sysco Foods was Wednesday, November 2nd. Our next delivery will be next Wednesday, November 16th. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

Meating the Need Update – September 2016

On Wednesday of last week, we delivered another shipment of food to the shelter and then was able to serve some of what we bought to the crowd of 450 hungry guests. On the menu was Salisbury Steak with cream gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, and iced tea, all provided by Meating the Need. The plate was rounded out with various types of desserts (cookie, cheese cake, or cupcake). Each time we serve dinner, we begin by bring plates out and hand delivering them to the disable and people in wheelchairs in the main dining area. Again, you can’t believe how grateful the people are and how many times I hear them ask God to bless us for being there for them with a hot meal. I am not a theological expert but you can feel God’s grace in the room. See the photos below of our team from the night.

Our last delivery from our friends at Sysco Foods was this past Wednesday, September 7th. Potatoes were not part of our order but Sysco threw them on the truck anyway. However they got there, were served them up! Our next delivery will be next Wednesday, September 21st. Here is what you bought and we delivered:

480 Salisbury Steaks
80 Lbs Fresh Salad Mix & 4 gallons of Ranch Dressing
100 lbs. Ground Beef

24 lbs. Ham (for sandwich lunches to go)
480 Beef Patties (4oz)

Meating the Need Update – August 2016 We had a huge crowd at the St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) kitchen at the Haven for Hope. It had been raining and a lot of people were trying to seek shelter. We served 488 plates of steak fingers with cream gravy, mashed potatoes, salad and dessert. Meating the Need provided the steak fingers, cream gravy and salad. We also provided the Kool-Aid to drink. You can’t believe how grateful the people were and how many times we were blessed by the homeless as they came through the line. I have been feeding the downtown homeless from the SVDP kitchen for 19 years and it is still a deeply moving experience each and every time. We added Kool-Aid drink mix and ice tea drink mix to the orders from now on because the kitchen had been serving cups of tap water when their supplies ran out. See the photos below of our team. Our last delivery from our friends at Sysco Foods was this past Wednesday, August 10th. Our next delivery will be next Wednesday, August 24th.
